John Spivey joined the Libertarian Party of Texas shortly after it spent $140,000 to get on the ballot in 2004. The reason it cost so much is that the Libertarians had to collect 45,000 signatures in the very short time-frame allowed by law. Meanwhile, Democrats and Republicans place their nominees on the ballot for free, by means of taxpayer-funded primary elections.
The ballot access requirements that Texas imposes on independent and minor party candidates are discriminatory and far more burdensome than needed to ensure orderly elections. The Texas Voter Choice Act will reduce the number of signatures required and eliminate unnecessary regulations, making the whole process more fair. If you think the ballot access process should be more fair, join our campaign to #flushthesystem.
